The Next Iron Chef in 1 week!

A and I used to watch Ernie on the old WCBS 11pm newscasts. He always looked like a puppet to us. - G

Ryan Adams - “New York, New York”

I love you New York xoxo

A testament that time heals all wounds. I was here in 2001. Witnessed the ugliness from East 4th Street after being stuck in the subway for 3 hours. Was thinking of moving to the left coast in early 2002 just to get out like so many others. Glad I didn’t leave. Got married in Dumbo and although it was beautiful it felt like two friends were missing from the equation that used to overlook and tower above the Brooklyn Bridge. I used to use those towers when I moved here in ‘96 to figure out if I was walking uptown or downtown. I used to look at them whenever I took the bus out of the city back to Pennsylvania for the weekend to visit mom and dad. And stare at them on my way back into the city so happy I lived in a place that constructed something so amazing. I have a daughter now. I’ll tell her all about it one day. The stench, the debris, the people lining up for hours patiently to use the pay phones since zero cell phone service worked, the chaos. The woman crying on the subway when the transit cop announced what had happened. The pride one has in a place where everyone comes together. Black, brown, yellow, white. Different languages, different customs but all in the true melting pot that made America what it is. Brooklyn is home and has been for a long time. I won’t leave you now. I love you New York. xoxo - G

In the old days, I made mix CDs and in the real old old days I made mixtapes. Now I make mixes with videos that congregate on YouTube in a nice playlist. In a few years I will telepath this info to her brain. :) - G

Happy Anniversary Allison! I have loved these 4 years together more than the 32 years prior to marrying you! xoxo - G

What does disrespecting Jewish people have to do with health care? I feel this debate is covert racism more than about the issue being debated. And it’s making the “right” look as loony as the left did in the 1960s. Also just because the woman saying “Heil Hitler” is wearing an Israeil Defense Forces t-shirt shows how ironic and stupid she is. But a lot of wingnut Christians in this country are for the defense of Israel for selfish reasons. Not to protect the Jewish homeland but because in scripture they need to have Israel intact in order for the Holy War to occur and for Jesus to come back on a cloud. Yeah, we’re dealing with a real rational person here. - G

from Bill Shireman "No One Wants To Talk About Their Idiots"

When any of us see threats to our well-being, we become afraid, and look for a cause or an enemy at which to direct our anger. It’s in our genes, and we’re better off because of it.

Because we evolved in tribes, for millions of years the enemy or cause was often someone or something outside the tribe. So we are quick to find “others” that everyone in the tribe can blame.

In today’s world, those instincts can be easily manipulated for political gain. It’s easy, for example, to slip a villain into that ready-made mental model. It’s easy to paint a whole category of outsiders as the enemy. We’re pre-programmed with the narrative, we just need to have the characters filled in.

Demagogues like Hannity, idiots like Beck, and paranoids like Savage either knowingly or ignorantly are happy to trigger us — to build their own power, wealth, egos, or all of the above.

As a result, the idiots — that’s all of us, remember — reinforce our wild fears and prejudices, and fail to learn to be smarter. It’s partly our fault: We should know better. But it’s also partly the fault of those in a position to manipulate us.
